Bearsden Community Hub and Halls to close for further RAAC investigations

Bearsden Community Hub and Halls will close today so that further investigations can be carried out into the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in the rear of the facility.Bearsden Community Hub

Survey work has been carried out across the Council estate to establish if RAAC is present. Structural engineers undertaking this work have today (Thursday 5 October) advised that RAAC is present in the rear section of Bearsden Hub and that the facility must close to enable further, more intrusive investigations to be carried out, and to establish what remedial actions may be required.

Signage will be posted on the doors to advise customers of the closure of the facility. In-person customer service delivery will remain available from the three other Community Hubs in Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch and Lennoxtown.

Library facilities are available in the other libraries throughout East Dunbartonshire, the closest being Westerton and Milngavie.

Commenting on the findings, Council Leader Gordan Low said, “With the discovery of RAAC in Bearsden Hub it is essential that we quickly establish the extent of the situation and the remedial actions required.

“Whilst our customers who use the customer service, library and community hall facilities will be disappointed, we thank everyone in advance for their understanding as we determine the extent of the RAAC and remedial action we then need to undertake.”

The Community Hub building, including both halls, will close from end of business on Thursday 5 October until further notice.

No other operational facilities across the Council estate have been found to have RAAC as part of their construction.
